Happy Canada Day!

The long weekend is upon us - Canada's birthday! Not too much planned except to relax. Much depends on the weather.
For the last two days in a row there have been fire alarms at the Grand Hotel. Also today, the two gay mounties made history by being the first two same-sex mounties to get married. This was at the Grand Hotel. Now I am wondering if there is any connection? Just kidding!

Some bad news for Digby. The Ferry service between Digby and Saint John is being cancelled at the end of October this year. What is happening to this part of the country? It is as if we do not matter to the powers that be. We used to have rail service, flights in and out of Yarmouth, year-round ferry service, and bus service on a regular basis. If this keeps up, the tumbleweeds will be blowing through this town! And people wonder why the population in this area is decreasing!

On a positive note, I heard about a remarkable guitar crafted by a Nova Scotian
named George Rizsanyi. The guitar, being held here by Colin James, is made up of 64 components of Canadian history and culture, including decking from the Bluenose II, and pieces of Paul Henderson's hockey stick in the mix. He learned alot Canada in the making of this guitar - called "the six string nation guitar". It will be played during Canada Day festivities in Ottawa by various performers, then will make its way back to Lunenburg for an August festival. It will play other festivals in between over the summer.
Have a GREAT weekend!

Fast Approaching Holiday

Yes, the long Canada Day weekend is fast approaching. A mood of patriatism swooped over me tonight as I realized how lucky I am - as we all are - to live in this great country. All you have to do is watch the news and see what is going on around the world to appreciate this country. Not that I agree with all the decisions made by our leaders, but we are much better off than most other countries in the world.

Superstore are planning to open some locations this Sunday, challenging the new Sunday shopping rules. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I think the government should have either allowed or not allowed Sunday shopping a long way back, instead of leaving loopholes in the law. Those loopholes have opened up a whole can of worms!

I went to the Superman movie last night. It was the best of the Superman movies to date! It is amazing what they can do now in terms of special effects as opposed to years ago when Christopher Reeve played Superman. I recommend this show to any fan of the "Man of Steel".

More exciting news! Spider-Man 3 is being released - but I'll have to wait until next year to see it. It comes out on May 4th, 2007. I used to collect all the "Spidey" comics and am a big fan. I still have most of the old comics - some of them may be of more value than the face price! There are some differences between the comics and the movies. For example, in the comics, Peter Parker had to manufacture his webbing and wear cannisters to carry it. More than once, he ran out of webbing at the most inopportune times. In the movies, his body developed a natural ability to produce and fire the webbing from his wrists.

Well, have a great night folks - need to check my "webbing..."

SUPERMAN!

This fellow is in a good position to keep an eye on things - he is on top of the world! The new Superman movie (Superman Returns) is due out this coming Friday. I for one am looking forward to it, although Spider-Man was my favorite superhero growing up. Brandon Routh stars as the Man-Of-Steel in this release. There is even an I-Max version of this movie with certain parts of it in 3-D. Viewers will be prompted when the 3-D sections appear. All I can say is wow! This will be the first action movie done in 3-D, although I have seen 3-D documentaries. It is an experience I would recommend to anyone - both visual and audio!

Wow! Got the panorama picture I took of the Calgary Skyline printed out and framed at South West Photo. It is now hanging on our wall above the steps - looking good. It will serve as a nice reminder of our trip. It is shown in a previous post.

That gunked up camera battery charger I mentioned in a previous blog will have to be replaced at a cost of close to $100.00! Even Stephen Sollows could not fix it. He said some "stuff" got into it and basically fried it. I have narrowed the suspects down to three felines who live here with us.

Weather was nice tonight for a bike ride, so that is what I did.

Time for a snack then some shut eye.
Bye-all!

Weekend Update

Just got home from a brief Ground Search & Rescue Meeting. Not much was discussed except whether to pursue a 40 acre land purchase behind our premises in Arcadia. For those who did not know, I am a member of the Search team, but I must admit that the Fire Department is generally more busy and is my priority at the moment. Ground Search does provide good training in outdoor survival, map & compass training, teamwork, etc.

Earlier this evening, I attended a going away service for the youth Pastor, Jonathon Cook, at the Wesleyan Church. He is leaving to join the RCMP and will be missed. It was a humorous affair at times, and tribute was paid for his service to the church over the past three years.
The process of hiring a replacement for him is underway.

I did not go to the races today - the weather has been really "blah" all weekend. I even noticed some flooding in some areas, for example on the corner of the Haley Road and Starrs Road. Good thing I have "Daisy" Sea-Doo - in case it floods up here on Sprucewood, I can just fire her up and take off!

The battery charger for my camera is currently at Repair-All, along with the battery. Why? Some mysterious thick, yucky crud got into it - I do not know how. It was on my floor near a plug where I use it. How this happened and what that crud was is a mystery to me! I cleaned it off as best I could, but it did not work after. Hopefully, Stephen Sollows will come to the rescue.

Speaking of taking off, that is what I am going to do now. I think that this blog en"compass"es my weekend.

Bad Parking Choice!

I hope this doesn't happen to you...all I can say is this..."Bad parking place choice."

Sunday Shopping Debate Drags On!

I do not envy this man, our new Premier. In 2004, people in the province narrowly voted in a plebisite to ban Sunday shopping. Superstore and Sobeys have recently circumvented the law by following Pete Luckett's example of utilizing a loophole in the law which allows grocery stores under 4000 square feet to open. Today, Premier MacDonald has closed that loophole to stores which did not utilize it before June 1st, 2006. Superstore and Sobeys will therefore not be allowed to open on Sundays. Another plebisite on this is promised for the municipal elections in the fall of 2008.
The question I have around this issue is this: No matter what the voters decide in the 2008 plebisite on Sunday shopping - will this issue ever go away? The reason I said at the beginning of this post that I do not envy our Premier is that no matter what he does with this issue - almost half the population will be disapointed.

"We believe it is important to respect the results of the Sunday shopping plebiscite held in 2004,'' MacDonald said in a statement.

I agree with what Rodney has done - whether we agree or disagree with Sunday shopping, what is the sense of having a plebisite if the results are not honored?

Hot Stuff!

Live fire training tonight - involving search & rescue using what we call "Rescue Randy". Randy is a 175 pound dummy we had to locate in a burning building - our burn building - and drag out. The dummy of course was on the second level, so it took awhile to find the guy. My low air alarm was on as my partner and I dragged the poor guy out. Very realistic, good training.
Do not forget the lobster festival this weekend here in Yarmouth - starts tomorrow.

Have a great, fire safe night folks! Posted by Picasa

The Race to Replace

I am a huge Lance Armstrong fan. Last year, he retired from the sport of cycling and will not be in this year's prestigious "Tour de France" bike race. Wanna be his replacement on the "Discovery Channel" bike team?
As a part of Discovery Channel’s Race to Replace, cyclists are invited to race with Lance on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. All you have to do is sign up. The fastest rider will earn a spot on the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team during an actual one-day race at the U.S. Pro Championships in Greenville, South Carolina.

Well, this could be my big chance...NOT!
Have a great night folks!

Nice Try!

Big disappointment for Edmonton fans - they came so close to bringing the Stanley Cup home. They had a great run, and the intensity of the series was high. I was disappointed they lost, but at least now maybe I'll get to bed at a decent time. When dad and I were in Calgary last month, all the games came on early because of the time zone difference. Maybe next season my "Habs" will go further in the playoffs.

Here is a picture of the Calgary Skyline - actually three pictures merged as a panorama - taken on our recent trip there. On the left is a section of the Stampede grounds. The challenge will be to get this panorama printed out properly and framed.

Well, have a great evening folks!

Lake Milo Maniacs!!

With the weather so nice this weekend, and with a little help from some friends, beautiful Lake Milo was taken advantage of by having some watercraft fun. "Daisy" Sea-Doo was just as anxious to cut loose as we were.
Travelling Man was kind enough to provide 2006 maiden voyage pictures of the launch of "Daisy". There was another family there with their new Sea-Doo this day (Saturday) and a fun day was had by all.
Any prospective Sea-Dooers heed this advice - always bring a garbage bag to protect your car seat after, because if you did not get wet, you did not have fun!! Just ask "Tuffysmom"...we had a blast in the Pictou River a couple of years ago. She would also recommend a first aid kit...haha!

Nice Day!

Had a nice bike ride tonight. The weather was beautiful. I took a tour through Pembroke and across the MacCormack road and through Hebron. The ride ends with a climb up Prospect Street. I saw a brand new Sea-Doo in Lake Milo tonight, just being launched. I plan on taking mine out tomorrow.

I am now hooked on the Sudoku puzzle craze. Our new summer student at the Centre does them. I tried one, and the rest is history. Be aware - they are very addictive! Good thing it's not a harmful addiction!

I had fun with the Da Vinci post. There will be more info in upcoming posts.

Do you recognize this man? He is the President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He would like to see Israel wiped off the face of the earth. His radical policies are in direct confrontation with the west, and apparently he has the backing of China and Russia. Why mention this? Keep your eyes and ears open - I think a military conflict with this regime is almost imminent. The U.S., Europe, and Israel will not allow Iran to develope nuclear weapons. A commentary for the day to ponder.

Well, time to hit the hay as they say. Does anyone know how that expression ever came about?

Bye for now!

Discussing Da Vinci Code

Disclaimer: I am not writing these comments because of being upset...on the contrary, Dan Brown should be thanked. His book and the subsequent movie have provoked much discussion around the church and its history. I just want to have some fun with this...you can always skip it if you are not interested in the topic.

Firstly, his novel is classified as "Historical Fiction". That being the case, you would expect a novel with a historically accurate background with fictional characters made up to his liking. Robert Langdon, Sir Leigh Teabing, and Sopie Neveau can be any type of characters he so desires. However, here is a quote from Brown himself regarding the historical accuracy of his work..."Obviously Robert Langdon is fictional, but all of the art, architecture, secret rituals, secret societies - all of that is historical fact."

Well, on page one of his book, it is stated as fact that the Priory of Sion, a European secret society, was founded in 1099. The Priory of Sion was founded in France in 1956. Quite a difference in dates.

Also it states that in 1975, Paris's Bibliotheque Nationale discovered parchments known as Les Dossiers Secrets, identifying numerous members of the Priory of Sion including Sir Isaac Newton, Borticelli, Victor Hugo, and Leonardo Da Vinci. These documents do exist, but were forged and planted by Pierre Plantard, who later admitted the documents were phony. A hoax.

More historical inaccuracies:

  • The Da Vinci code claims that the pyramid outside the Louvre in Paris has 666 panes of glass. Go to their website - it has 673 diamond shaped panes of glass.
  • It also claims that the Greeks based their Olympic games on an eight year cycle as a tribute to the planet Venus, which represented a goddess. The games were in fact held in honor of the Greek god Zeus on a four year cycle.
  • According to the Da Vinci Code, the Merovingian royal family founded Paris. Actually, Paris was established by a tribe of Celtic Gauls called the Parisii in the third century BC. The Merovingians did make Paris the capital of the Frankish kingdom in AD 508.

Question: If Brown cannot be relied upon to accurately recount the most basic of historical facts, then how can he be trusted to correctly explain more complex issues?

More later - Good night all...luv yaas!

Still Alive!!!

Hang in there - there is still a pulse!! What a game tonight! I wasn't going to blog tonight but now I feel invigorated! The game went into overtime and I debated whether to stay up. I gambled, stayed up, and it paid off. Game 6 goes Saturday in Edmonton!

Aussiesnan wasn't the only one to visit a gravesite today. I visited the Nickerson site in Mountain Cemetary where mom's parents are buried and where her name is engraved. It's hard to believe it's just over a year she passed away.

I got a nice bike ride in, going all the way to the MacCormack road. I rode by the old YACRO house I used to work in. It is supposed to rain tomorrow so am glad I got the ride in.

Last night I attended part 1 of a 4 part discussion series on the "Da Vinci Code". Coming up very soon - some comments on this. I trust you will find these comments enlightening - stay tuned.

Time for bed!

This is how I feel - time to go to bed! I keep telling myself to get to bed at a half decent time, but it seems that instead of doing so, I end up at the front of the computer. So tonight, I am not going to blog - I will not blog the night away. What you are reading is not a blog, it is a statement of intention to go to bed, get some sleep and not blog. So blogging is out for the night - I have shown remarkable restraint in not succumbing to the lure of the clacking keys and silly "famblogs".

I stayed up late last night and suffered the indignity and disapointment of watching the Edmonton Oilers lose. So I really should be going to bed to catch up on my sleep. That is why I am not blogging tonight - I promise.

Aren't you glad I did not blog tonight? Goodnight.

A "Great" Niece.

Sheila's great niece (her nephew's daughter) Jessica recently took part in a dance recital at the Y'arc. She looks a tad nervous in the first picture, but quickly gets into the spirit. She and all the kids had a blast. Note the different costumes throuhout various parts of the show. I have more pictures, but these capture a little of the spirit of the evening. Photgraphing this was a challenge for a couple of reasons - low light and the constant movement of the participants. Some "red-eye" had to be removed due to all the flash of the camera - Photoshop to the rescue. This is also the first time I used the "Blog This" feature to post these pictures. You can post them all at once that way - much quicker.

Somebody put alot of work into the costumes - great job.

The hockey game is now on. I am hoping that Edmonton can win tonight and tie the series.

Tomorrow we have our Annual General Meeting at work. The best part of the meeting is the snacks afterwards. Leave it to me to mention food!

I think these pink costumes were the prettiest on the night.

Well, with the hockey game on, I must be going. In the meantime, keep your stick on the ice and enjoy the pictures!

Amazing Ice Sculpture!

This ice sculpture, done after the 9 /11 attacks, is so amazing, I just have to share it. I don't know who did it, but what a shame it had to eventually melt, considering all the work put into it. At least someone took a picture of it to preserve the memory. I've had it on my computer for quite awhile.

Tonight I spent at a dance recital at the Y'Arc, taking my friend Sheila and her mother. We went because Sheila's great niece Jessica Campbell was performing in it. Of course I took my trusty camera and will be posting some pictures of the recital soon. I know you will be absolutely impressed with the costumes...I was!

I mentioned "Hello" on my last post. You can see the Hello icon at the bottom of the Picasa2 screen. These two programs work well together.

This fellow, Ryan Smyth, scored the winning goal tonight to beat the Carolina Huricanes. Edmonton are BACK IN IT! What an exciting game! Their backup goalie did an outstanding job!

I am hoping for good weather tomorrow as it is raceday out at Lake Doucette Speedway. Races are every two weeks on a new paved track, proving to be very entertaining.

Well, I've had my cup of tea and a bowl of cereal, so that means I'm about ready for bed.

Remember gang...do not kneel down with your spurs on!

Iceberg Dead Ahead!

I don't want to collide with this on my Sea-Doo!

I just downloaded a program called "Hello" and this post is just a practice run. The above photo, which I did not take, was published to the blog by "Hello". It is designed by Google, the same folks who gave us Picasa2 and is designed to work together with it to share photos with friends and on blogs. So far I like it...it makes it easier to locate the photos you wish to post because it uses Picasa2 to do so.

Good! I made my way around the iceberg...now if I can only avoid the bridge! Still trying to figure out this "Hello" thing. Hang in there.

Frustrated Biker!

What do you do when you are aching to go for a bike ride and the weather will just not co-operate? You are reading the answer! Yes, you sit your fanny in front of a computer screen and instead of burning off calories, you listen to the "click click click" of the keyboard, the constant hum of the computer fan, you lift up your head and rub your eyes, then keep repeating the above procedure. Going to the bathroom even takes second place...! Don't laugh too hard. I read in the Halifax paper a couple of years ago that some people were so addicted to gambling so much that they wore "Depends" at the their terminals so as not to have to leave for the washroom. Gads! That could happen to us, you know. Travelling man and I visit Aussiesnan and what happens? We end up at the computer reading these things...I go in to read a comment she made instead of hearing her tell it!!

Anyhow, Travelling Man has posted some pictures of the old homestead, so I will share another picture of our trip taken at Heritage Park in Calgary. They have a stern wheeler tour boat at the park...very unique. Here it is:

Well, that's it for now...have to go buy some "Depends".

Howdy "Dude"ies and "WooHoo"

These two dudes appeared out of the West, in Red Deer, AB. Meet my cousin Dennis on the left, and Travelling Man (dad) on the right.

Also meet cousin Norma on the right with her brother Dennis. These were taken in front of the home where Dennis is staying in Red Deer. We took Dennis to lunch at a restaurant in Gasoline Alley called "Humpty's", with very well done retro decor. I just love such decor.

This same day, we went to Sylvan Lake, a nearby resort. Here is an interesting picture of some young folks having fun on the weater...wooohoo!!!! These kids saw me taking their picture and did not mind. The guy standing up just gave me an enthusiastic "woohoo", flinging his arms. Unfortunately, I just missed that and caught him after the aforementioned pose.

Travelling Man just procured a new monitor today. I am next...I cannot get over the difference in the clarity of pictures with the new fangled monitors...and they are flat screen...much smaller.

Edmonton lost tonight - YIKES and RATS!!!!

Well, I must go to bed. Stay tuned for yet more pictures of our Alberta adventures...coming up...Travelling Man on the homestead.
Sleep tight - don't let the bed "blogs" bite!

Some Highlights - Bit by Bit!

As nice as the City of Calgary is, I am glad to be home. Norm and Norma are wondeful hosts, and we accomplished what we set out to do. Yesterday was a long day in terms of travelling, so I did no blogging.

Here are some pictures of Shannon, Frank, and Cole - their son. Travelling Man even slipped in there on one pic!
Don't forget to click on these things to enlarge them...if you dare! More later.
